ZUG ALLIANCE

Thinking energy & mobility forward

The Zug Alliance

In the ZUG ALLIANCE, business, science and politics jointly create the knowledge, the framework conditions and the products and services that will secure tomorrow's prosperity. The aim is to foster cross-sector collaboration in order to decarbonise energy and mobility faster.

Declarations of intent have turned into installations: temporary photovoltaics now generate electricity on flat roofs that would otherwise have stayed empty. Bidirectional charging stations feed electricity from vehicle batteries back into the grid at three sites. Under the umbrella of the «Zug Virtual Power Plant» we are currently running seven energy projects — each scientifically supervised, each with real installations in the canton of Zug.

In addition, the ZUG ALLIANCE can count on close cooperation with the Canton of Zug. Our projects are scientifically supervised: the energy projects by Empa, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the Bern University of Applied Sciences, among others, and the mobility projects by the Institute of Mobility at the University of St. Gallen.

Our projects

«Intelligence instead of copper»: rather than reinforcing the distribution grid primarily with additional lines and transformer stations, we use storage, control, load shifting and sector coupling to get more capacity out of what already exists. Seven projects are under way — from temporary photovoltaics and grid-serving battery storage to dynamic grid tariffs.

The roughly 85,000 vehicles in the canton of Zug are a storage system that has already been built. We have shown — for the first time in Switzerland, at three real sites — that bidirectional charging works reliably, shaves peak loads and increases self-consumption, without restricting users' mobility. The results of the initial phase are available.
On behalf of the Canton of Zug we examined whether an automated ridepooling service is feasible in the canton — technically, operationally and economically. The feasibility study is complete; the Canton of Zug decides on the next steps.
